What percent of Crimea wants to be Russian? ›

Crimea is under the de facto control of the Russian Federation. Any visit will require a Russian visa, and the only feasible way to reach it is via Russia. Russian immigration and custom agencies operate in the peninsula's ports of entry, and foreign citizens need regular Russian entry visas to visit Crimea.

While Russia and 17 other UN member states recognize Crimea as part of the Russian Federation, Ukraine continues to claim Crimea as an integral part of its territory, supported by most foreign governments and United Nations General Assembly Resolution 68/262.

Ukrainian used to be taught everywhere in Crimea, and at the time of the annexation 13,322 children, or 7.3%, were studying in schools where all subjects were taught in the language. Seven of these schools were in cities on the peninsula; none were in rural areas.

Background. Crimea was part of the Crimean Khanate from 1441 until it was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1783. After the end of the empire in the first stages of the Russian Civil War there were a series of short-lived independent governments (Crimean People's Republic, Crimean Regional Government, Crimean SSR).

The short answer is: There are three official languages in Crimea: Russian, Ukrainian, and Crimean Tatar. Almost everyone in Crimea speaks Russian in public. Over 20 years of visiting Crimea once or twice a year, I have rarely heard people speaking Ukrainian or Crimean Tatar.

The most famous traditional Ukrainian dishes are borshch, varenyky, holubtsi, Chicken Kyiv, banosh, and syrnyky, and it surely is not an exhaustive list. Borshch (sometimes written as borsch, borsht, bortsch, or borshch) is a sour soup with distinctive red colour.

The diagram below, which is based on Ukraine's latest census, shows that 58% of Crimeans self-identified as Russian. Only 24% of Crimean residents considered themselves to be Ukrainian. As far as Ukraine as a whole, only 17% of the population self-identified as Russian.

Result. According to the figures released by the Kherson regional section of the Russian Central Election Commission, 87.05% (497,051) supported the annexation to the Russian Federation, with 12.05% (68,832) against and 0.9% of ballots invalid, on a turnout of 76.86%. In 1954, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet transferred the Crimean Oblast to the Ukrainian SSR from the Russian SFSR. The territory had been recognized within the Soviet Union as having "close ties" to the Ukrainian SSR, and the transfer itself commemorated the Union of Russia and Ukraine Tercentenary.
